Scarlett Johansson’s another movie will also land at Toronto International Film Festival. Jojo Rabbit is set in Germany during World War II. A lonely Germany boy named Jojo idolizes Adolf Hitler and even makes friends with an imagined Adolf Hitler who mentors and encourages him in real life. The imagined one, played by Taika Waititi, is totally different from the real one. He is more friendly and even a little silly, keeping accompany with Jojo to face difficulties in his life. At the same time, Jojo also finds out that his mom, played by Scarlett Johansson, hides a Jewish girl in their attic. What will innocent Jojo do between the nationalism and humanity?

This film can definitely stir you to a serious consideration about marriage by its core elements of long-distance, communication and balance between life and work. Not mention that super star Scarlett Johansson stars it with Adam Driver. The director Noah Baumbach said that “There’s a hidden thriller, a procedural, a romantic comedy, a tragic love story. I felt like this was a subject that could handle all those things”. The film has premiered at Venice Film Festival and Adam’s performance is widely praised. Scarlett Johansson is in a controversial story recently because she defends Woody Allen and Dylan Farrow, who was Allen’s adoptive daughter accusing of Woody for his sexual harassment, slammed Scarlett by satirizing “Scarlett has a long way to go in understanding the issue she claims to champion”.

The story is inspired by the viral New York Magazine article. Wall Street was heavily struck by Financial crisis. Some strippers relying on elites from Wall Street for their business also got troubled. The ambitious stripper played by Jennifer Lopez decided to organize her outstanding dancers to maker their own rules. Renée Zellweger is back! Her play of the legendary singer Judy Garland in Judy is widely praised. The film begins with Judy’s concerts in London in 1968, revealing how a singer fights with management for her music dream and belief. The film also presents how a musical deal the relationship with fans. Some of Judy Garland’s songs are included in the film and Renée Zellweger also shows her voice.

This movie reviews a turning point in Catholic Church. Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins are invited to play Pope Francis and Pope Benedict. The movie is about the dramatic transition between two Popes in 2013, during which the Catholic Church was facing scandal, so two Popes need to find a common ground despite differences and defend the belief for their followers. The director Fernando Meirelles was nominated for Oscar best director in 2006 by Constant Gardner.

The film is an adaptation from Charles Dickens’ masterpiece David Copperfield. The director Armando Iannucci wrote the script with Simon Blackwell, infusing modern thoughts into the classic literary works. It is worth attention and expectation both for films fans and literature lovers. That is Armando Iannucci’s third movie after The Death of Stalin and In the Loop. Dev Patel plays David Copperfield. Tilda Swinton and Ben Whishaw will also in this movie.

Hope Gap

It is another film discussing marriage and family. The couple played by Annette Bening and Bill Nighy has been married for 29 years. When their son pays a visit to them, the husband announces he will leave next day. The son, played by Josh O'Connor, is too shocked to accept this. They three have to go through the trails and tribulation together to face it. The director William Nicholson who used to works as a screen player and is famous for Gladiator and Shadowlands. That is his second movie after directing Firelight in 1997.

The Goldfinch is also adapted from a Pulitzer Prize–winning novel with the same title by Donna Tartt. Theo survives from a terrorist attack in museum, but his mother dies. Theo’s growing is filled with sorrow, remorse and loneliness with his longing for dead mother. He keeps a painting taken from the museum as a reminder to the happiness he shares with his mom. The painting is world-famous Goldfinch and is firstly thought to be destroyed in the explosion. When the painting is found to be in possible existence, Goldfinch is dragged into the criminal underworld. The cast includes Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Jeffrey Wright, and Finn Wolfhard.
